As a bridesmaid you have a strong supportive role you must play during the entire wedding, from pre-wedding preparations to the honeymoon farewell. Here are some of the duties you will need to be aware of.
Wedding Planning
- Although this is typically undertaken by the bride and groom, the bride may ask you to help her to find a wedding venue.
- The bride may like some help with writing out her wedding invitations. The Designer Card Company can print guest names in the wedding invitations if desired, to save you a job!
- Help the bride to decide what information to include in the wedding invitations for her guests. You may need to include information on the venue, maps, directions, gift lists and RSVPs. For this reason you may wish to suggest that the bride chooses wallet style wedding invitations so that everything is neatly enclosed. The Designer Card Company offer ‘Deluxe 3-way Folded’ cards that feature the RSVP card tied in with double satin ribbon. This elegant option is a top favourite for brides!
- The bride may need help in ordering and choosing decorations and favours. She will want your honest opinion, so try to provide constructive comments on her choices to help her narrow down the options.
- The big duty for the bridesmaid is to go shopping with the bride to help her choose her wedding dress. Again, constructive comments will be necessary to help her make the right choice. Think about how the dress will go with other accessories, making allowances for any weather conditions and the best type of dress for her body shape.
- The bride may also ask for assistance in choosing bridesmaids dresses. It is important to make sure the dresses are ordered and arrive in enough time for alterations!
- Help the bride with the seating arrangement for guests. It can be very difficult to arrange the seating so that everybody is happy and sitting next to people they are likely to get on well with. The Designer Card Company also design table plans to match you wedding stationery. Please just ask for more details.
The Wedding Day
- Assist the bride in getting into her dress, and with her hair and make up.
- Ask if the bride needs anything. Very often the bride is too nervous to eat, but it is important that they eat so that they don’t faint at a crucial moment!
- Assist the other bridesmaids on what they should be doing.
- Ensure the bride has some privacy if she needs some quiet time before the ceremony.
- Be the witness in the signing of the marriage license.
- Assist the guests to their seats and be social prior to the wedding. As a bridesmaid you are very important and the guests will want to talk to you.
- Try to be the first on the dance floor. Sometimes it takes a while to get the party warmed up, so the bride and groom will be grateful for your help!
- Try to take as many photographs as you can. The wedding photographer won’t be able to catch every moment, and you might just manage to catch a wonderful moment that will be remembered for years to come
Most importantly, provide moral support and be a great listener throughout the whole process. This is the biggest day of the bride’s life and can be very stressful, so she will be most grateful to have a helpful bridesmaid!
