The wedding industry remains largely unaffected by the credit crunch as people still have their heart set on getting married, a recent poll has found.
Some 61 per cent of people at the British Bridal exhibition said they didn’t think the current economic conditions were impacting the sector, although 31 per cent said they thought those getting married were monitoring their wedding spending more closely.
Thea Darricote, executive retail editor at Conde Naste Brides magazine, said getting married still counts as one of the biggest days of people’s lives.
“The bridal market is fairly resilient. People are always going to get married. When there is a downturn people really look to things that are going to be exciting to look forward to,” she commented.
According to a survey carried out by You & Your Wedding, the average cost of a wedding in the UK is now £20,273.
The biggest expense is entertaining guests, with the second biggest being the honeymoon, averaging £3,220.
Meanwhile, research from wedding insurer Ecclesiastical shows that over the past five years, Friday weddings - which often cost less than a wedding held on a Saturday - have increased in popularity by five per cent.
This equates to around 12,000 extra couples marrying on Fridays every year.
